At the beginning of the 18th century this area of coastline was known as ‘Common Gate’ and few people lived here. By 1773 this land was part of Lord Bute’s High Cliff house estate. the park land of which had been landscaped by Capability Brown and later, in the 19th century, by Lady Elizabeth Stuart de Rothesay. This booklet refers to those who trod the cliff top paths and the beach: the smugglers, landowners and visitors.
